Martin The Warrior Essays - Martin The Warrior, Redwall, Free Essays

Martin The Warrior Essays - Martin The Warrior, Redwall, Free Essays Martin The Warrior Martin In a time of danger A time of hunger The mouse was a stranger The mouse was strong He showed the cats With help from some bats How to behave He showed his pain, anger, and strife The creatures were thankful As a matter of fact He was honored for not only a life But for many years to come The novel, Martin the Warrior by Brian Jacques, is a book about a young mouse warrior named Martin, son of Luke the Warrior, a mouse that fought sea rats, One day, after the murder of most of his tribe (including his wife), Luke set sail to have his revenge against Vilu Daskar, the stoat pirate responsible for the massacre. Before he left, he gave Martin his sword, which had been handed down through their family since Luke's own grandsire lived. This book is about how Martin travels through a land full of moles, squirrels, and other woodland creatures which talk and walk upright. Martin goes around meeting creatures from all different lands and asks them to join his army to fight a tyrant who is keeping slaves in his fort, Marshank. The plot of this book is how Martin and his friends fight the tyrant, Badrang, to free slaves. The main idea of the book is how and why Martin and his army fight the tyrant. When Martin was captured as a slave for Badrang the Tyrant, he was furious. Not only did the evil rat steal his father's sword, he beat and mistreated all of the slaves horribly! Devising a plan, Martin frees himself and two of his friends from the Marshank, the slave camp: Brome the mouse and Felldoh the squirrel. Brome's sister, Laterose (Rose for short) and her companion Grumm the mole all set out with Martin and his friends to go get help from their hometown of Noonvale. Unfortunately, due to the sea's conditions, Martin, Rose, and Grumm get separated from Brome and Felldoh. The two strings of the story carry on and tie together at the end: Martin's group eventually reaches Noonvale, where he returns to Badrang to get his revenge, and Brome and Felldoh join the Rambling Rosehip Players, a bunch of happy-go-lucky animals that made the hardships less hard, and also get to the slave camp. The ending is tragic, and whenever I read it I get depressed. Martin, in the end, retrieves his sword from Badrang, and succeeds in killing him, but Rose, who he has become very much attached to, tries to help Martin in killing Badrang, but only ends up getting killed by him herself. Also, Felldoh died toward the end he had fought Badrang one-on-one but the lousy cheater called his army to help him. Felldoh, being a great warrior, killed many of Badrang's men but did not kill Badrang himself. Brome still lived, but found he did not like war, so he became a healer. Some of the characters that Martin encountered along his travels changed from being his enemies to being his allies. The creatures changed when Martin was off to go fight the tyrant and when he and his friends asked them to which to join fight the tyrant so he could not capture any more creatures for his slaves and makes his horde any more powerful. Sometimes it did not seem believable because of how they turned from enemies to allies instantly and why they joined without even knowing who Badrang the tyrant was. I felt like I had a similar relationship when Martin was leading his army into battle. I have this feeling when Im a captain of my basketball team and I have the partial responsibility of leading them to victory or defeat. I thought that the best scene in the book was when Martins army attacked the tyrants fort for the second time. It reminds me about whenever I lead or am a part of an activity of some sort, like basketball or tennis. I think that the title, Martin the Warrior, is fitting because its simple and it tells what the book is about. I liked the authors style of telling what was going on in the book and how he described it. He

Complete the following discussion questions Essay

Complete the following discussion questions - Essay Example Even when you think you understand the text through this approach, the approach itself indicates that there can be no understanding. I think gender criticism is perhaps the best approach to take for either of Kate Chopin’s stories. This is because she presents her characters with such feeling as she attacks some of the social customs that have managed to come between the genders. In â€Å"The Storm†, for example, Chopin presents her main character, Calixta, as a frustrated woman trapped in a less than fully satisfying relationship with a man who is kind and simple but not the man she was in love with. That man is the one she has passionate sex with on the day of the storm, finally fulfilling a desire she’d carried since she had known him in Assumption but not been able to fulfill because he left her. Gender criticism would examine the circumstances of her life, the role she is expected to play and the lack of choice she was given. At the same time, gender criticism allows one to examine the men who appear in the story as well. Bobinot is seen as simple and accepting and truly in love with his wife. He is sensitive to her moods and tries to do what he can to keep her happy, not understanding what it is that makes her upset. He is even sensitive enough to take their son with him when he goes shopping in order to give her some time to herself, but has nevertheless managed to trap his wife within the social roles expected of women regardless of her own inclinations. Alcee also provides Calixta with no free choice when he leaves her in Assumption, but is seen to have been acting with her best interests at heart, knowing he could not be with her and that to do anything then would have damaged her reputation and her chance for a better life. Both men are seen to be trapped in social conventions as much as Calixta within this approach, which increases understanding of the

Outsourcing And Supply Chain Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Outsourcing And Supply Chain Management - Essay Example India is one of the world’s top destinations for outsourced work. Companies along with manufacturing parts they also outsourced their services. Functions like customer service are often outsourced to call centers outside the United States. One of primary advantages of outsourcing is that it enables companies to reduce costs. One of the disadvantages of outsourcing work is that the company loses the ability to control its quality. Another advantage of outsourcing is that it creates flexibility for an enterprise. The cost savings achieve through outsourcing can be a critical success factor that keeps a particular company in business. In the auto industry companies often outsourced the production of auto parts. My sister was a victim of outsourcing because her company shut down operations in America to move to Asia. The supply chain management of an organization is a very important factor that can make or break a company. Supply chain management is the combination of art and science that goes into improving the way your company finds the raw components it needs to make a product or service and deliver it to customers (Wailgum, 2008). A company that in the 1990’s was able to separate itself from the competition due to its unique supply chain management techniques was Dell Corporation. Dell revolutionized the computer industry by becoming the first virtual computer company. The firm saved a lot of money in inventory costs by delivering turn-key computer products to its customers. A few years ago I worked for a company that changed its suppliers three times during a year due to the fact that none of the companies supplied raw materials would provide an adequate level of service. Wailgum, T. (2008). Supply Chain Management Definition and Solution. Retrieved February 13, 2011 from http://www.cio.com/article/40940/Supply_Chain_Management_Definition _and_Solutions 3. Outsourcing has gotten a bad reputation from many Americans who viewed outsourcing as an evil business strategy that is hurting the US economy by taking jobs oversee. The reality is that outsourcing is saving more jobs than what is taking away. If American companies did not utilize outsourcing on many occasions these firms would not be able to compete. Outsourcing provides companies with much needed savings. The savings achieved through outsourcing enables companies in America to keep their prices competitive. 4. Outsourcing has become a very popular concept that is gaining popularity across America. In 2010 the television broadcasting network NBC developed a parody series called Outsourcing. The series is a comedy that illustrates how American companies are moving their service operations to India in order to reduce costs. In the series only the manager is American, while the rest of the staff is composed of India workers. When I watched this series I sometimes as k myself how spread is the outsourcing movement in America. In the series the workers are highly competent salespeople that get the job done. 5. In a way outsourcing affects most businesses in America directly or indirectly. You mentioned that in your dentistry practice the business is affected by outsourcing from the material acquisition perspective. Many companies nowadays choose to buy parts and raw materials from China and India due to their lower costs. Purchasing materials from these countries enables American companies to be able to keep their prices low. Businesses are not the only ones looking for a bargain these days. The internet has allowed people to compare prices and find the lowest possible price on their purchases. 6. Your response was very insightful

The Mind Is the Best Medicine Essay Example for Free

The Mind Is the Best Medicine Essay The mind is the most powerful tool a man can use. The body is nothing without the mind. It gives us power to have a wild imagination and have infinite ideas. If the mind has delightful ideas, your body will survive and prosper. If the mind has immoral ideas, your body will stress and decay over time. Although the mind is very powerful, it is up to the person to control it. In As A Man Thinketh, James Allen elaborates on how the body is the servant to the mind. He also states how good thoughts are key to achieving a healthy body. Man can achieve prodigious health in the mind, and body, by simply having pure thoughts. Disease and health, like circumstances, are rooted in thought. Sickly thoughts will express themselves through a sickly body (Allen12). Thoughts are the foundation of the body (Chu). Our body works off of what we think and feel everyday. If you have negative thoughts, your body will be very ill. A healthy body shall not have immortal thoughts. A healthy body has positive thoughts that pass through the body. The people who live in fear for disease will usually get it. This is because of the negative thoughts running through the body affects your health. Anxiety will completely demoralize the body (Cramer), which will give disease a great chance to attack. While impure thoughts will shut down the nervous system. Strong, pure, and happy thoughts build up the body in vigor and grace. The body is a delicate and plastic instrument, which responds readily to the thoughts by which it is impressed, and habits of thought will produce their own effects, good or bad, upon it (Allen 12). Pure thoughts will clean the body of anxiety. Whenever thoughts are pure, it detoxes the body of all the negativity. The results of pure thinking will only shed good results. When the mind is pure, the body is healthy. Men will continue to have impure blood as long as they propagate unclean thoughts. Negative thoughts only harm the body, which will cause harm in the future. Change of diet will not help a man who won’t changes his thoughts (Allen). Although diet is important to stay healthy, thought is much stronger than food. A man who eats ruthless will also have impure thoughts. Men who can’t control what they eat, usually have trouble controlling their mind. If you can’t control your stomach, you certainly wont be able to control your thoughts. Temptation is very strong, but you mind is even stronger. When a man makes his thoughts pure, he has no longer desire for impure food. If you would perfect your body, guard your mind. If you would renew your body, beautify your mind. Thoughts of malice, envy, disappointment, despondency, rob the body of its health and grace. A sour face does not come by chance; it is made by sour thoughts (Allen12). Having a thick face is also important for a healthy body and mind. You shouldn’t let others get in your way of pure thoughts. Envy is the cause of impure thoughts. You shouldn’t envy a person, bur rather succeed and surpass the person. Disappointment also causes impure thoughts to the body. You shouldn’t be disappointed but rather appreciative of what you have. All of these thoughts can be controlled by the mind. Having these feelings will cause depression, which means you can’t control your thoughts. Impure thoughts will slowly harm the body causing major damage to the mind. There is no physician like cheerful thought for dissipating the ills of the body; there is no comforter to compare with goodwill for dispersing the shadows of grief and sorrow. To live continually in thoughts of ill-will, cynicism, suspicion, and envy, is to be confined in a self-made prison-hole. But to think well of all, to be cheerful with all, and to patiently learn to find the good in all such unselfish thoughts are the very portals of heaven; and to dwell day by day in thoughts of peace toward every creature will bring abounding peace to their possessor (Allen 12). You don’t need a doctor to tell you how to use your mind. You should be your own doctor, because you are the one controlling your thoughts. Positive thoughts will keep you away from the doctor. If you have corrupted thoughts, you are just digging a whole for yourself (Cramer). If you have constant impure thoughts, the body will be under major stress. When the stress builds up so does all the impure thoughts. The body does not function efficiently with these impure ideas. Causing harm to the mind and body, one shall get rid of impure thoughts. They who have no central purpose in their life fall an easy prey to petty worries, fears, troubles, and self-pitying, all of which lead, just as surely as deliberately planned sins (though by a different route), to failure, unhappiness, and loss, for weakness cannot persist in a power-evolving universe (Allen 14). People who don’t know what to do in life will have impure thoughts. One who thinks of small problems will have major anxiety causing harm to the body. If you can’t control your thoughts, little things will tend to bother you. Even though these problems are not major, it can lead you to bigger problems. These impure thoughts ill only lead you to failure. Having small problems on your mind will only cause you to think of more problems that you already have. When all the impure thoughts build up, it will be very difficult to have any pure thoughts in your mind. A man should conceive of a legitimate purpose in his heart, and set out to accomplish it. He should mak e this purpose the centralizing point of his thoughts. It may take the form of a spiritual ideal, or it may be a worldly object, according to his nature at the time being; but whichever it is, he should steadily focus his thought forces upon the object which he has set before him. He should make this purpose his supreme duty, and should devote himself to its attainment, not allowing his thoughts to wander away into ephemeral fancies, longings, and imaginings (Allen 14). You are the one controlling yours thoughts. Another person should not be the creator of yours thoughts. You should think deeply of your thoughts and not let them go to waste. The mind is very powerful and the thoughts are its artwork. You should take your time in making a great piece of artwork. If your thoughts are impure, the art will come out with dark colors. If your thoughts are pure, your art will come out with extravagant colors. You should have a legitimate purpose for your ideas. Once a great thought has come to you, you should set forth and try to accomplish it. Thoughts are just in your head if you don’t do anything about it. The important part is accomplishing your pure thoughts. With great accomplishments comes a great thought. A man can only rise, conquer, and achieve greatness by uplifting his thoughts. Thinking positive is very important because it gives you a sense of direction. If a person has negative thoughts, they usually wont come up with many pure thoughts. Negative thinking can harm the body and mind to look at the downside of things. Positive thinking on the other hand, is essential to pure ideas. A positive thinker has a pathway to pure ideas. You cannot achieve a lot of things with negative thinking. Men will remain weak, and abject, and miserable by refusing to lift up his thoughts. The body is nothing without the mind. Our mind is the creator of our thoughts. Whether our thoughts are pure or impure; our body does not function properly without our mind. To sustain a healthy lifestyle, one should have pure thoughts. Your body is not healthy if your thoughts are not pure. Strong, pure, and happy thoughts build up the body in vigor and grace. The body is a delicate and plastic instrument, which responds readily to the thoughts by which it is impressed, and habits of thought will produce their own effects, good or bad, upon it (Allen 12). Impure ideas will only cause harm to the body. Impure thoughts lead the body to undergo stress, which leads to disease. One should not worry so much because harm will come to the ones who worry most. Anxiety will only cause harm, and ruin your positive thoughts. Having pure ideas is important to staying healthy. Man can achieve prodigious health in the mind, and body, by simply having pure thoughts. Works Cited Allen, James. As A Man Thinketh. White Plains, NY: Peter Pauper Press, 1970. Chu, Chin-Ning. ESP Abilities :: essays research papers

Ability and talent A person's psychic, ESP, or telepathic abilities can't be judged by a single or a group of exercises. This ability develops through time and practice. So, if you don't do well the first time, don't feel bad, the exercises need to be practiced over and over. Be patient and you can expect to see an improvement in all your latent abilities over a period of time, not just in a few tries of guessing cards. Attitude The mind set and attitude at the time of the test are critical. It is important to maintain enthusiasm and interest when testing yourself because it has been found to make a difference. When a person begins to get bored, their score often times goes down. Meditation This helps to train your mind to focus. It’s very helpful to meditate before you start ESP exercises. The object of the process is two-fold; to relax the body and to subdue the thoughts that continuously traverse our mind. One never stops the mind completely, but one can achieve states of relatively long periods where the mind is silent. It is during these moments, no matter how brief they are, that we enter a state of the void, the null or nothingness. Start the counting from around 20 and imagine seeing the shape of each number as you count down. At one point you may disappear from the counting process and not be aware that you've done so. It’s OK, don't be concerned, its part of meditation. You can also say to yourself â€Å"deeper† and imagine your body drowning into deep state if counting requires too much effort. ESP Exercises 1. Using the ESP symbols, make your own card preferably 25, 5 for each symbol. Try to guess what the card is without looking. It’s always good idea to record your results to see if you’re making progress. If it helps, make the card distinct as possible and practice with fewer symbols until you feel comfortable. Also playing with different colors may help you differentiate better. 2. Get 3 cups and fill each cup with water, orange juice and milk. Either blindfold your eye or set up some kind of barrier where you can’t see the content of the cup, place hand directly over the cup and guess the content of each. Focus and try to feel the energy each liquid is exerting.

Colleges should provide as much money for sports

In todays generation book is not the only knowledge which is enough for practical life, practical knowledge is equally important as the knowledge which we get from books. In context of Nepal schools and colleges don't seem to provide as much money for sports activities as they provide for libraries. Many people think that book gives us all the cognition but I disagree. We live in a generation filled with competing students. Yes, it is true that studies are the most important pillar for student's good uture but sports is equally important.Regular participation in sport activities will help a student to keep his/her body fit and mind fresh. If students are involved in sports then they will know what they're good at, because there is a very good career in sports too and they may even choose to follow that career. Colleges spend too much money for libraries but hesitate to spend money for sports but it is not healthy to do so even biologically because if a student only studies and doesn' t take part in ny sports activities then his mind automatically becomes dull and all that he has studied might not get inside his head, which will be useless. Its 21st century, a modernized time, where people are interested in people who are good at both education as well as sports. It isn't enough for people to be good Just studies; they should also be good at sports. As it is said â€Å"A sound soul dwells within a sound mind and a sound body', Just like that sports helps us our maintain our physical fitness nd mental abilities come to the conclusion that a good physical condition creates a strong mental power.Just studying makes people dull and Just sitting in one place for a long time makes us lazy and physically unfit. I know we students should study but we should also give our body some time to relax by playing games so that it can get some break by all that studying. Some parents might think sports are unnecessary but it is actually very important for a child to go out and pl ay and have some fun.

Free Essays on Sociology

Sociology is the scientific study of human social activity. In the effort to study human social activity sociologists break it down into objects of analysis. Sociological Theories One of the sociological theories is conflict theory. The conflict theory deals with people’s level on wealth, or class. The conflict theory says that social change is beneficial, contrary to focuses on social order. In the story of the woman and her children, the conflict theory plays a big role on the situation. Police of higher class are threatening the homeless woman. The conflict theory is a constant struggle of people of higher class over powering people of lower class, or the weaker. The police are trying to over power the woman by telling her to leave. Even though the woman and her children were doing nothing wrong, the police used their power to tell her to leave. Also the people of the area showed their conflict theory by telling the police officers to come. They must have felt embarrassed to have a woman of such lower class to be around them. They used their power of class to have the woman removed from their community. The woman wants to be there because she has no home and it is a good community to be in, but the people look at it as an embarrassment to them because it makes their area look bad for someone of such lower class to be around them. The conflict theory is unique to all other theories because it separates people into categories determined by their wealth and standards. Their status is the element that categorizes them, weather it is class, race, or gender. The conflict theory do not always use class, race, and gender all at once. In this situation race and gender is not a main issue, although gender could be a reason, but it would fall under the feminist theory. This story is mainly dealing with class. Through all this conflict the woman feels over powered and dominated because she is not welcome there because of her wealth standards,... Free Essays on Sociology Free Essays on Sociology Sociology The functionalist perspective is a very important part of sociology. Founded by Emile Durkheim, functionalism is thought of as, â€Å"society as a living organism in which each part of the organism contributes to its survival† (Schaefer, pg. 10). Another way to understand functionalism is to look at some of the simple ways and ideas of the theory. One of the ways to see functionalism is to understand that this theory of sociology looks at facts overtime or certain things in society like crime, sports, race, etc. and examines what the world would be like if one of these aspects were to disappear. Functionalism deals with slow change, progress, and the social equilibrium. Emile Durkheim, the founder of functionalism, was born in 1858 and was the son of a rabbi. Durkheim studied in both France and Germany, in which later in his life became the first French professor of sociology. The most well known work of Durkheim was done around 1897 and dealt with suicide and society, which resulted in his book Suicide. The book looked at suicide in society and stated that society was the main factor of people committing suicide. Some of Durkheim’s research involved looking at facts like why men were more likely to commit suicide, why soldiers were more likely then citizens, or single people more likely then married people. Durkheim asked questions like, why do some people kill themselves and others don’t? Durkheim came up with two different types of suicide, altrustic and anomic. Altrustic is giving up your life for something that you believe in. An example would be a soldier fighting for his country or the way that Jesus gave up his life fo r mankind. Another example would be a cult. Altrustic suicide is any suicide that a person would commit out of the act of love. Anomic is different from altrustic because these people that commit suicide feel disconnected with society and feel that killing themselves is the only... Free Essays on Sociology Sociology is a social science that makes sense of human behavior and human nature by looking at societies and social relationships (Curra 56). There are many different ways to look at sociology; we can look at human behavior in its habitat or human behavior with other humans. We are social beings in the society we live in, we follow social meanings, and we are social actors which change our realities of everyday life. Social meaning is a product which is assigned by members of a group. People make what we know to be meaning. Meaning doesn’t exist out there by itself; we as a group of people give things meaning. Would we as babies know what is right and wrong? No, we are taught those things as we age. Also there are different meanings to things in different societies. If we go to the east people sit on the floor, but in the west it wouldn’t be considered appropriate. This is because meanings have more then one way of looking at it; the people who give the meaning may have different views. This is very significant because we as people don’t understand these rules have not existed out there, they were created by us. We follow these rules because we live in civilization where these meanings have been created. A child like Isabelle, who was discovered in November 1938, she was, isolated most of her life. She was forced to live in isolation because of the embarrassment it caused her grandparents. Isabelle spent most of her time with her mother, who was deaf and mute. So this means Isabelle didn’t get a chance to hear or talk to anyone. Therefore she didn’t learn how to communicate. But, when she did communicate it was a form of body expressions. When she was discovered she acted like a wild person, because she feared them. When she was discovered her caretakers started to acquaint her with the social world. This would involve her to learn the rules of society, which she had no clue of before because of the isolation. This sh... Free Essays on Sociology During this semester, we have covered many articles. After reading â€Å"The code of the streets†, by Elijah Anderson, I realized what the inner city is really about. Anderson’s views on the code of the streets were strictly about how to survive as far as protecting your self and providing for your self. He breaks it down into two groups and then compares the two groups how society views us African Americans. The two groups were the â€Å"decent† and â€Å"street’ families. The decent families have an average job, take care of their family and are some what educated. Many of them go to church and play a major part in their children’s schooling. They teach their children no to get involved in violence and they are strict. On the other hand, the street families are the total opposite. They are drug users and they are prone to violence. Anderson shows that some of the reasons for a lot of these problems originate from their environment. If y ou grow up or live around a drug infested neighborhood, then most likely you will result to drugs. In the community, due to lack of jobs, and employment discrimination, a lot of people turn to violence and Anderson is trying to let mainstream know that they need to know the code of the streets. Another article we read was William Julius Wilson’s article, â€Å"When work disappears†. Wilson talks about how the employment woes. Jobs are widely available, but due to race and lack of individual initiative, jobs are limited. Jobbing is so ridiculous, that adults in many inner city neighborhoods are not working in a typical week. â€Å"Joblessness triggers other neighborhood problems that undermine social organization, ranging from crime, gang violence, and drug trafficking to family breakups†, says Wilson. It seems that you can’t get a job because of your race or your background. People are so fed up with it, they move out but that causes problems for other residents. When a lot of peo... Free Essays on Sociology Sociology is the scientific study of human social activity. Free Essays on Sociology Voting today has turned into a big conflict. Between trying to get the young people to vote, and all the absentee ballots that certain states are having. I certainly do believe that voting is important to do at a young age, or at any age. For the youth of the nation to vote, the leaders of today are going to need to get out there and pressure them to vote. There are many problems today that arise with voting and the young voting. I believe that if I could understand everything a little bit better than I would be more likely to vote. Many problems arise today with voting itself. First of all when the youth look at the ballots today they don’t understand what they are voting for and what to already know. From this I believe that is where all our absentee ballots are coming from. The leaders of today need to get out there and explain to the youth what exactly they are voting for and what they need to know to vote today. Instead of just telling them to vote, they need to explain this in a =n easy and understanding way. Explain what the amendments are for, and who they should vote for in congress and the supreme court as well. The youth today doesn’t get into to voting for two good reasons. First of all, they aren’t shown any reason to vote seeing that the leaders of today don’t get out there and bring themselves down to our level. The second reason is that they don’t understand what’s on the ballots in the first place. If the people running would bring themselves to a concert or a sports game and talked to the young, they would become more appealing. Also they need to sit down and find ways for the young to understand what exactly they are voting for. They need to explain what each amendment is for and who each of the people on congress and the supreme court are. Also the sheriffs also need to reach out to the youth also. When I look at voting myself, these are all the reasons I might not have wanted to vote. Not very man... Free Essays on Sociology The Ego And Rational Thought The seemingly paradoxical roles of ego and rational thought can be seen as both opposing functions, and complementary functions, both ultimately of equal importance, and both necessary for the formation of a balanced human being. The ego can be seen as the primal garden. It contains within it the seeds for rational thought and the grounds from which rational thought may proceed. Rational thought itself, therefore, is the fruit born of ego. Only after the ego has brought forth the existence of rational thought can the next process occur - the formation of the concept of self-realization. Although identifying the motivational force behind behavior has been micro-philosophized for thousands of years, with various schools of philosophy arguing about what, exactly, motivates the human being to action - egoism to please self, or altruism to please others being primary arguments - the actual underlying motivation for ethical conduct continues to be the same motivation observed by the Ancients. Aristotle observed that love begets love, that the good coming from a person begins first with a core of self-love which is then extended outward. Intertwined within all of the actions, he observed, is a desired state of happiness as opposed to a state of pain. In acting virtuously, one experiences a sense of happiness. Although the term egoism has developed distasteful flavors over the centuries, ego remains the primal garden that can then be tended by the conscious thought. Ego, even in its most primitive stage, knows well the opposing concepts of pain and pleasure. They are simple concepts to understand. Like a finely balanced scale with neither tray holding a disproportionate share of motivational fuel, the ego provides first a form of science of in which it perceives a need to preserve itself. It provides functions and maneuvers that are not necessarily in need of conscious thought. After this stage, the r... Welcome to Reedsy

Welcome to Reedsy Welcome to Reedsy Hi! Welcome to Reedsy. At the London Book Fair this past April, I heard a bit of wisdom worth passing along: The bigger the ship, the more difficult it is to change its course. It’s easy to see the truth of that when you consider that of the 600,000 to 1 million books published last year in the US, more than half were self-published. And the authors of those books actually earned more than those whose books were released by big-ship traditional publishers. As you might have guessed, I’m a big fan of little ships. Especially those setting sail in this vast ocean we call â€Å"the self-publishing industry†. You don’t have to study the waters for long to see that most companies are taking the â€Å"self† out of self-publishing- they are optimizing services for speed and profit, rather than focusing on developing authors and their books. At Reedsy, we focus on authors. The whole idea behind self-publishing is to bring power and freedom back to authors, so it only makes sense to make authors our focus. But the more I spoke to authors- traditionally published, self-published, not-yet-published- the more I realized that authors don’t churn out books in a vacuum. They have help. Sometimes, lots of it.The authors I interviewed couldn’t stop talking about their fabulous editors, creative cover designers, layout artists- one writer even told me about his â€Å"book shepherd†. Taking all of this into consideration, combined with countless hours of research about what authors need, where they struggle, and what they have to do in order to be successful, led to Reedsy. And Reedsy led to this blog. Here, I’ll focus on topics like how to write, self-publish, and market books. What services to get, where, and how much to pay. In short, I’m here to offer impartial advice if you’re new to self-publishing.So what is Reedsy? Well, it’s a publishing marketplace with a carefully curated pool of freelancer s. We’re not just another freelancer free-for-all focused on high-volume projects and outsourced bids; in fact, we’re the complete opposite of that. Reedsy is populated by professionals focused on authors and their books, ready to take you from shore to shore- from the germ of an idea to a published book. There is no big secret in self-publishing, no method that will turn a lousy manuscript into a best-seller- or even a great manuscript into a best-seller. It’s all about tips, little things to know, lots of common sense and, more importantly, having the right people to help you. The crew you’ll need varies from author to author, genre to genre. Implementing Software Development Project Management Best Practices Assignment

Implementing Software Development Project Management Best Practices - Assignment Example This may prompt activities such as performing an inventory. This will ensure that every software development tool conforms to the set standards. The process modeling is mainly used to enhance the flow of software development work. The process model has clear guidelines and procedural steps that a developer is required to follow so that they can produce a quality software product that not only meets the user requirements but also reaches the quality assurance standards. The process of inventory in the process modeling may used to help reduce the cost of development while at the same time enhancing the quality. In this process, the implementation of the assets requires the use of asset management program. This is always the first step and level of information that is necessary to implement the software management program (Tyugu et al, 2009 ). This will help measure some elements of software. Especially with the software usage seen to be metering, the following can be determined; whethe r the organization purchased many assets that the consumption rate. The use of process framework thus helps reduce such misuse of resources in the organization. This is also aimed at determining if more software has been purchased beyond the organization needs. This will additionally help minimize the cost of maintenance and also give room for the re-allocation of the unused software assets. This will ensure that that the organization avoids underutilization of the development resources. This makes it very easy for the organization to have better plans for future developments. This will also control the levels to which the unauthorized software is being used within the organization. To avoid these, the organization needs the process models that give clear development frameworks. The development framework will then establish the development parameters. These parameters are used to set the development objectives and the development

The Future of Shipping Industry Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The Future of Shipping Industry - Article Example The decline in the overall demand from developed countries such as US and UK is forcing many developing and emerging countries to look for local demand, and as such, there is very little demand being generated internationally as suppliers from countries like China is finding it difficult to sell their products in international market. (Wade). Until most recently, the industry was facing an uphill task of meeting the expenses because of increase in oil prices. Due to the lack of fuel efficiency, many shipping companies found it difficult to manage their costs as the consistent increase in oil prices was seen as one of the greatest threats to the short-term viability of the industry. (Vidal). Considering this fundamental challenge, environment specialists like Vidal conclude that the future of shipping industry would largely depend upon how the industry adapts to the biofuel technology as the industry does not only have to withstand increasing costs but also have to face the increasing criticism for its involvement in polluting environment. It has also been argued that the ship designing is largely based on existing regulations which need to be fulfilled before a ship can be rolled over for the commercial purpose. Due to complacent nature of such regulations, it is often felt that the chip makers, as well as shipping industry, have to face the wrath of industry dynamics which are not allowing them to be more competitive. As such the future of shipping industry is largely based on the changes to be made into the relevant regulations in order to make it more competitive and sustainable. It is also important to note that due to increased awareness of the consumers and emergence of so-called â€Å"ethical consumers† demands that the supply chain of the international organizations shall be ethical in its orientation. However, the absence of any such concepts in other parts of the world may not lead to the development of community shipping and as such due to a diversity of the suppliers and buyers; shipping industry may not make a transition to community shipping until regional economic clusters are developed.
